A list of your current and potential customers in a properly organized computer database can be an enormous business asset, creating a targeted list of people already interested in your products or services.

Direct marketing is either Business to Business (B2B) or from Business to Customer (B2C) It is direct because it is not bulk delivered to a random market, or included arbitrarily in newspaper or tv/radio advertising. It seeks to bring directly together the business and the persons most interested in that particular business or service. A direct market is a targeted market and therefore potentially a more lucrative market.

Direct marketing is a form of marketing using "addressable" media such as mail and email.

The marketing of the product or service is addressed directly to the target customer who has already indicated that they are interested in your services, by purchasing from you or signing up to a newsletter, or opting in for more information (permission marketing). Their details go directly into your database and make more efficient use of your advertising resources.

This form of direct advertising produces a much better conversion rate.

For example, a person interested in football, would receive all football related offers. Someone interested in pets would likewise receive all pet related offers. With a professionally created database, you could also market specifically to particular age groups, gender or geographically situated customers.

During 1998, 2.8 billion direct marketed email messages were sent out, that figure is rising all the time and passed 250 billion in 2006!

Bill Gates was asked in an interview how he thought internet marketing and advertising would grow in the future. His response was that digital advertising & marketing would outgrow the tv and print media in the next few years. As the average household now spends more time online, this will continue to grow.
